Description
1. Product Overview
A Pipe Flange is a method of connecting pipes, valves, pumps and other equipment to form a piping system. It also provides easy access for cleaning, inspection, or modification. Flanges are usually welded or screwed. Flanged joints are made by bolting together two flanges with a gasket between them to provide a seal.
Using flanges is the second most used joining method after welding, allowing for excellent flexibility and structural integrity in demanding industrial applications.
2. Types of Pipe Flanges

- Weld Neck Flange (WN): This flange type is designed to be joined to a piping system by butt welding. Although relatively expensive due to its long neck, it is highly preferred for high-stress applications. The neck transmits stresses to the pipe, reducing stress concentrations at the base of the flange.
- Slip-On Flange (SO): The slip-on flange is slipped over the pipe and then fillet welded inside and out. They are favored over weld neck flanges by many users because of their lower initial cost and ease of alignment.
- Blind Flange (BL): Used to blank off pipelines, valves, and pumps. Blind flanges are highly stressed parts. Due to their design, they are capable of withstanding high mechanical stress and internal pressure.
- Threaded Flange (TH): Features internal threads to connect with threaded pipes, usually utilized in low-pressure and non-critical applications where welding is not suitable.
- Lap Joint Flange (LJ): Used with a lap joint stub end; the flange slips over the pipe but is not welded to it, allowing easy alignment of bolt holes.
- Socket Weld Flange (SW): Connected by inserting the pipe into the socket end and applying a fillet weld around the top. Often used in small-diameter, high-pressure piping.
3. Flange Facing Types
To ensure proper sealing, flanges come with different facing designs:
- Flat Face (FF): The contact surface is completely flat, usually used with full-face gaskets.
- Raised Face (RF): The most common type. It features a small raised section around the bore, concentrating pressure on a smaller gasket area to increase seal containment.
- Ring Type Joint (RTJ/RJ): Features a machined groove into which a metallic ring gasket is placed. Designed for high pressure and high temperature.
- Male and Female Face (MFM): Consists of a flange with a raised area (male) matching a depression (female) on the opposing flange.
- Tongue and Groove Face (TG): Similar to MFM, but with a raised ring (tongue) fitting into a matching groove.
